Renner was born on August 9, 1878 in
Wernigerode, Germany. He worked during the 1920s through 1950s. He wrote two major typography texts one called
Typografie als Kunst (Typography as Art) and Die
Kunst der Typografie (The Art of Typography). He created the well know Typeface called
Futura in 1928, as well as

Ikea the well-known home supply store as well as in Calvin Klein ads.
Renner worked as head of Commercial Art and Typography department at the Frankfurter
Kunstschule in 1925-1926. In 1926 he was the Director of Munich's

Renner published "
Kultur Bolschewismus?" ("Cultural Bolshevism?") which discussed his opposition to the Nazis. He was arrested and then removed from his post in Munich in 1933 after the Nazis seized power of Germany. His book was removed from the Germany Book Market until 2003 because it opposed the Nazi Regime.
